"The great thing about photographing golf courses from the air is that I never three putt."

Photographing golf holes from the air is an interesting challenge. I've learned to shoot only during early morning or late afternoon. That insures long shadows that makes the contours stand out. The first example below was shot less than 10 minutes from sunrise. The second was shot about 45 minutes later at a different golf course, still showing lots of well defined shadows and great detail.

A few other tips: Only shoot from a stable platform you can position exactly where you want to shoot from. That means a helicopter, a good pilot, and no door to obstruct you from leaning out as far as you need to for the shot. Yes, buckle up.

Camera-wise what makes the most sense is shooting at about ISO 400-1000 at 1/1,000 shutter speed. That way you will eliminate camera-shake due to any helicopter movements.
